Zazzi was based on a building that stood on the corner of Culvert Road and Seven Sisters Road, London N15. It caught my eye one day as I was driving past. Why it interested me, I've no idea. I stopped the car to look closer. Later I went back to draw and take reference photographs. Basil Rowe, a commercial advertising artist, laid out the lettering for me to paint. My lettering is poor. I cared about such things then. Now I work looser and would tick it in myself. I worked on 'Zazzi' for over a year. Many years later a man living in Italy emailed to say it was where he was born and bred. He’d come across it while researching his genealogy. The original painting is available for sale on the Home page.
