This was painted from life standing outside an isolated cottage in Oxfordshire where we once lived. There was a farm grain dryer just opposite. One day a delivery lorry arrived. The driver, on seeing me, came over. He looked at the half-completed painting and began to reminisce. For years he had delivered for a nearby brick works. What he didn’t know about bricks and bricking was nobody’s business. He walked round the cottage giving chapter and verse on the various bricks used. There was a real mixture and he knew where they all came from. He knew about hand-made bricks, the sizes, the earths used, the drying, the various kilns used for firing. It was a lunchtime master class in brick making. The painting is presented in a moulded cork and wood section by the celebrated Italian framer Gibello.
