        ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Painting, for me, is all about the moment. I try to capture those rare moments when some thing, some person, some object, some arrangement of the commonplace, suddenly appears uncommon. I don’t search for these moments; they tend to find me. All I do is react. Anything may invoke the spell, a sudden angle of sunlight, a shower of rain, the light failing on a winter’s evening. Nothing stays still for long. The thing is to be there, to see it, to record it.

But why paint it? Why not use a camera? Because a camera records the image and the image alone is not my subject. I try to paint what I felt when I first saw the scene, or had the idea; when I experienced for the first time that involuntary, hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck feeling. At the risk of sounding arty, I think of this as a kind of thin slicing of reality, an attempt to separate from the backcloth of the everyday, a sliver of time and place that, for whatever reason has said, look at me, paint me, make a painting of me.

So that’s what I do, make paintings. I also make a promise.

When I paint I’m conscious I’m not making art, I’m making furniture. I build the paintings, using such craft as I have, to make them last. The term ‘art’ may or may not be conferred on the pictures after they’re completed and, naturally, I hope my work earns the accolade. But whatever’s said comes later. In the beginning is the work, for good or ill.

After all, what is art?

An American judge once said of pornography: ‘I don’t know how to define it but I know it when I see it.’ Art’s rather like that. There are more explanations of what art is than you can shake a stick at. We all have our favourites - I’ll show you mine if you’ll show me yours. So, while the Rockies may crumble and Gibraltar may tumble, my combinations of Masonite and light-fast paints, if protected from fire and flood, will probably last a thousand years. That’s my manifesto.

If they don’t, well, get back to me.
