As you probably know, the reason painters so often paint self-portraits is not self-obsession, but simply because of lack of sitters. (Actually, I sometimes wonder if this glib assertion would stand up to rigorous enquiry, but that’s another matter.)  This version came about because I suddenly realised that if I sat in front of a window at night, the window would be my mirror. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy.
