Stonor Cricket Club’s matchless Oxfordshire ground is almost universally acknowledged to be ‘the most beautiful cricket ground in England - if not the world’. It cries out to be painted. The title comes from the equally matchless, Mark Twain: “Saturday morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life... ...Cardiff Hill, beyond the village and above it, was green with vegetation and it lay just far enough away to seem a Delectable Land, dreamy, reposeful, and inviting...” If that isn’t the finest description of what it’s like to be young and free, in the morning of life, I don’t know what is.
