RED DEER

20" x 15" (50 x 38cm)

Dry brush/Acrylic on gesso panel

Private Collection

An found object, painted using a mixture of dry brush watercolour and acrylic on a gesso panel. Even in the Highlands, a place of ‘flesh, fur and faeces, bone of man and beast…’ it’s rare to find a skull with antlers lying on the hill. The red deer is the largest mammal in Britain. It has been here since we were joined in a true European union by a land bridge. Deer thrive. We’ve killed off their natural predators, the bear, lynx, and wolf. The deer are now hunted for food and for what is called sport. ‘...from crag to crag / the tell tale echoes rumbled / another furred of feathered thing / from life to lifelessness is bundled...’
