Everything was in retreat; the morning clenched against the weather. Mud stood ridged like concrete. There’d be no ‘plein air’ painting today. Even the light seemed reluctant to be outdoors. Today was for standing, looking, etching a memory. A slick of ice on the cattle trough. A plastic bucket, its contents frozen solid, huddled into the ground for shelter. The ‘haunted, frightened trees’. In the bitter cold I had ‘quiet guard’. In an hour I didn’t see a soul. Turning away into the wind, I saw across the field  behind me two wild deer grazing, untroubled by my presence. They looked up, looked away, looked down. They know the rules: eat, reproduce, survive.
