The churned water caused by the passage of a ship is intriguing. It seems to be aerated, oxygenated maybe, and the colours are Caribbean greens, blues and turquoise. Even the dark waters of the north Atlantic become lightened and sparkle. Bright white foam scuds back and forth across the surface, racing often in contrary motion, seeming to be independent of the direction of the ship. If you stare long enough you can become fixated, isolating the colours – by my count there are usually four. It’s rather like those Magic Eye books of a few years ago, without the 3D effect.
