Colour, it seems to me, is rather like water in some ways. With water you can analyse it, weigh it, measure its flow; observe, experiment and systematically study its structure and behaviour; take it through its phase transitions from liquid to solid or ‘an airy nothing’; poeticize it, extract knowledge from it, drip knowledge all over it, drink it even. And at the end of it all, you still have something called water, which is a total mystery. Colour is rather like that. Its wheels are forever turning as new knowledge supersedes old. Do you and I see the same colours? Is your ‘red’ my ‘red’? I don’t know. I believe red has a longer wavelength than other colours. That’s why it can sometimes seem to stand ‘in front’ of other colours. This may explain why I occasionally experience a 3D effect when seeing red placed against other hues. That’s the effect I’ve tried to induce in this painting.
