In wintertime, as the thermometer sinks lower, abstract pictures are drawn in ice on the land. ‘When the short day is brightest, with frost and fire…’ a walk becomes a gallery visit. Everywhere you look there are images to be ‘seen’, waiting for their 15 minutes of fame. The real and abstract worlds merge into one. Then, before the thaw, comes the pre-thaw. A puddle takes centre stage. There are imperceptible movements, the first signs of the phase transition from solid to liquid that will culminate later in the vanishing act of evaporation, of disappearing into thin air. The everyday miracle, the magic without a magician. ‘Between melting and freezing, the soul's sap quivers’.
