A friend's grounds in a beautiful estate in Suffolk, a sun-hat day, taking my ease by the stream, listening to the water and the birdsong and the conversation of friends in the near distance. A stranger approached, their shadow coming to rest on my left shoulder. There was a silence. Then, after a while, she spoke: ‘Why do you draw?’ Flattered by the attention, I gave the most truthful answer I could. 'Because,' I said, 'I've found, down the years, drawing is rather like reading aloud. It draws people to you. They want to know what you're saying, or to see what you're drawing. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you'll meet a beautiful person." Turning, I saw that day I was lucky. She was truly beautiful. She was three years old.
