Now you see them, now you don’t. Do Canada geese migrate? I don’t know. I’ve  often goggled at geese but I’ve never Googled a goose. I do know this merry band migrated in an out of this painting with an almost seasonal regularity. What started out as a study of water in oils, became a study of moving water. That raised the question of what was moving the water. The geese then flew into mind and landed without so much as a by your leave. They were then culled in a merciless extinction because the painting was becoming too sentimental, too chocolate boxy. The rascals then fought back, partly because I missed them. I’d grown to like their white chinstraps. I remember Colonel Chinstrap, at least I think I do, but I’m not going to Google him either. This in-out-shake-it-all-about happened a few times until sheer exhaustion forced me to desist. If you happen to own a box of chocolates measuring some 2ft x 3ft I’ve always thought this would make a perfect lid.
