In the detail, so we’re told, is where the devil lives. In fact, in representational painting, details can act like tree rings, a sign of age. The young artist works fine, keen to show off her pin sharp vision. Later, in maturity, a splodge can be just as effective, or even more so. It’s a litmus test that doesn’t always hold true. POST-IRONIC IRON HORSE

24" x 36" (61 x 91cm)

Acrylic on gessoed panel

£7,500

This painting - and for that matter, all other paintings on this site - were done using nothing smaller than Winsor & Newton Series 7, No 3 sable brushes. Despite the sable name, the hair is not sable. It is the winter fur from the tail of the male kolinsky, a species of Siberian weasel, no less. The hair has unmatched strength, slenderness, and resiliency. It makes one of the the finest brushes money can buy. There are smaller brushes for those of a miniaturist bent.
