We spent many holidays at the Dartington Summer School of Music in Devon. The heart of Dartington is the Great Hall. It was built, in 1388, for the half-brother of Richard II. Indeed, the badge of Richard II and the Plantagenet’s - a white hart on a red rose - can be seen on the central boss in the roof of the porch. This noble lineage is echoed today in the name of the en suite alehouse at the south side, The White Hart. I called this Dartington Solo because I’d also painted the three windows of the Hall, calling that picture - you’ve guessed - Dartington Trio. I painted and drew aspects of the hall and its great Gothic windows many times while enjoying the sweet airs of summer and the drone of distant bagpipes. The work is presented in a dark blue stained wood moulded frame. A limited edition print of this image is available.
