The heavy snowfalls in the winter of 2009 influenced a series of landscape paintings I’d begun late in 2008. Scenes were transformed, obliterated in some cases. My objective became to try to paint, not just the snow, but the cold itself. Some days were iron raw, too cold even to draw outdoors. One morning while out, I had to abandon my car. During my forced cross-country walk home, I saw this straggle of wire fence and next to it, the forlorn hedgerow, penetrated to its heart by the weight of frozen snow. I can still hear the sound of the wind snapping at the hood of my anorak.
