A pencil study for the painting, Blitz. To save you having to turn your computer upside down, the copy on the notice board reads: ‘This site has been acquired from British Railways for municipal housing. It will be developed by Westminster City Council by arrangement with the Greater London Council.’ How ancient the names seem now. The date would have been circa 1970. I originally made a small painting of the scene, called Site. That was exhibited at the RA in 1975 and sold into private collection. The image stayed with me and I began work on a larger panel, using a combination of oils and acrylic paints. During the course of this, I made this study. The precise location of the now demolished building is difficult to pinpoint because, literally, the earth moved. The best I can say is, at the time I painted the original picture I was standing facing south, with the Regent’s Canal behind me. I was looking towards Marylebone Road, a thoroughfare that runs east to west, left to right across the picture. The painting was completed in March 2008 and sold into private collection.
