This painting was of a certain viewpoint on a favourite walk. The particular route was one I followed for many years with a good friend who, alas, is no longer with us. I painted the picture as a memento. While I was working on it, and indeed for some time afterwards, I found the scene rather melancholy. But then, like the friend, the feeling passed. I came to find the image cheerful. It helped retrieve memories of happy times, in all sorts of weather, and especially the agreeable conversations. We rarely disagreed. He was a true friend, a dog, ‘a very dog’. The work is presented in a red gesso and silver-gilt frame by Mike de Albuquerque.
